Health check-ups are the easiest thing in the world to postpone. Nothing hurts, nothing is obviously wrong, and there is always a more pressing use for the next half hour. That's precisely the problem: the conditions worth catching early are the ones that give you no reason to act.
Qrystal Pharmacy sits at 301 Borough High Street, a few minutes from Borough Market. Most of the checks below take ten to fifteen minutes and don't need a GP appointment — which makes them realistic to do on a lunch break, after a market run, or on the way home through London Bridge.
Start with blood pressure — it's free, and it's fast
High blood pressure affects more than one in four adults in the UK, and it usually produces no symptoms at all. It's one of the largest single risk factors for stroke, heart attack, and kidney disease, and enormous numbers of people carry it without knowing.
The NHS runs a free blood pressure check service through community pharmacies specifically to close that gap. At Qrystal it works like this:
- Walk in during opening hours, or book a slot if you'd rather not wait.
- We take up to three seated readings on a validated clinical-grade monitor — the first reading is often higher, so repeating matters.
- We explain the result on the spot, in plain language.
- If your reading is elevated, we arrange 24-hour ambulatory monitoring (ABPM) so your GP receives an accurate picture rather than a single snapshot.
It's free, needs no referral, and you don't have to be registered with a local surgery — useful if you work in SE1 but live elsewhere.
Who it's for: adults aged 40 and over, without an existing hypertension diagnosis, who haven't been checked in the last six months. Younger adults can also be offered a check where a pharmacist judges it clinically appropriate — a strong family history, for instance.
What else is worth checking, and when
Beyond blood pressure, a few things reward periodic attention:
- Cholesterol and cardiovascular risk. Relevant alongside blood pressure, particularly from your forties onward or earlier with a family history of heart disease.
- Blood glucose / HbA1c. Type 2 diabetes develops quietly over years. Worth checking if you have risk factors — family history, raised BMI, or a history of gestational diabetes.
- Thyroid function. Persistent fatigue, unexplained weight change, or feeling cold all the time are worth investigating rather than absorbing.
- Vitamin D and B12. Common shortfalls in the UK, and easy to correct once identified. We cover the vitamin D picture in detail in our vitamin D guide.
- Weight and lifestyle review. If weight is the thing you keep meaning to address, our weight management service offers a structured, pharmacist-led starting point.
We're building out private blood testing with on-site sample collection and same-week results from accredited UK labs — ask us where that has got to and what's currently bookable.
The NHS also offers a free NHS Health Check every five years for adults aged 40 to 74, arranged through your GP surgery. If you're in that bracket and have never had one, it's worth chasing.
Fitting it around a Borough Market day
We're a short walk from most of the places people in this part of SE1 spend their time.
- Borough Market: roughly 5 minutes on foot along Borough High Street.
- Borough Underground (Northern line): about 2 minutes from our door.
- London Bridge (Northern & Jubilee lines, National Rail): about 8 minutes' walk.
- Guy's Hospital and Southwark Cathedral: both within a ten-minute walk.
- Buses: frequent routes stop directly on Borough High Street.
Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9:00–18:30 and Saturday 9:00–14:00 — the Saturday morning slot tends to be the easiest one for people who work full-time.
What happens if something comes back abnormal
This is the part people worry about, so it's worth being clear.
An abnormal result is information, not a diagnosis. A single high blood pressure reading, for example, frequently isn't hypertension — which is exactly why the ambulatory monitoring step exists. Where a result needs following up, we explain what it means, what the next step is, and who does it. With your consent we share results with your GP so your record stays joined up rather than fragmented across services.
And if the result is normal, you get something genuinely useful: a baseline, and a date to come back.
When a check-up isn't the right route
Screening is for when you feel well. If you already have symptoms — chest pain, breathlessness, unexplained bleeding, a lump, or anything that has changed and isn't settling — don't wait for a routine check. Speak to your GP, or call NHS 111 for urgent advice. For chest pain or severe breathing difficulty, call 999.
For same-day help with common conditions such as sore throat, sinusitis, earache, shingles, or an uncomplicated UTI, our Pharmacy First service can assess and treat without a GP appointment.

The whole argument for a check-up is that it costs you ten minutes now instead of considerably more later. If you're near Borough Market this week, that's ten minutes well spent.
